A Note on our Artworks
The artwork featured in our Advent Calendar is unique and so each calendar will have a different piece of Eryl Fryer's work.
Ellie Heaven has created a series called 'The Seasons of Our Farm' and therefore each calendar will have one out of the four seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

Our Artisans
Ellie Heaven
Ellie is a landscape artist based in Cumbria, splitting her love between the rugged drama of the Lake District and the wild rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales. Working in oil, she is able to merge her two greatest passions, hiking and painting, to bring others closer to the landscapes she cherishes. Her work is an expression of emotion and atmosphere as she attempts to portray the true mood of a moment in time that moved her enough to capture it.
She uses textured brushstrokes and a playful use of colour to convey the energy and spirit of the landscape, often becoming more expressive and dramatic the larger her canvas. When she can, she paints on location, en plein air, allowing her to respond directly to the moving light and changing colours. For larger pieces, she works from these studies and photographs she has taken on location, loving the freedom and scale a huge canvas offers.
The landscapes Ellie paints are not always well-known; they are quiet moments or hidden spots that capture her attention whilst out walking. Whether it is the mood, the light, or the shapes of the mountains, her paintings are reflections of a memory rather than a snapshot of a beautiful view. She gets most excited by a dramatic sky, especially just after a storm has settled, right as the sun begins to break back through the clouds.
When Ellie revisits her work, she wants to re-immerse herself in that moment, and she hopes others feel that same sense of connection and escapism. She would especially love her paintings to be a gateway for those who may not otherwise reach those hidden places up in the mountains, so they too can feel that priceless connection to the land that inspires her.
Sweetpea Ceramics
Charlie or “Sweet pea” to her mother trained in 3D Design & Craft and later studied to be an occupational therapist in mental health services. Sweetpea Ceramics was born from a need to create and to feel connection to the natural world around her; taking mud and turning it into something beautiful.
This collection is inspired by the infamous Lake District fells. She is a keen hiker and has memories entwined with the paths that travel this wild landscape. Her ceramics reflect the contours and colours of this space, carving the landscape in abstract form, and bringing these spaces and memories into her home and yours. Celebrating nature in all its glory.
Eryl Fryer Ceramics
She first touched clay aged twelve at school. Her pottery teacher, Louis Jones, was truly inspirational and the love of the medium of clay has remained with her.
After school she continued pottery at night school and eventually worked for her A level in ceramics at Preston College. This opened the door to further study at the University of Central Lancashire under the tutorship of Dave Binns obtaining her BA and then MA.
She has a studio at home in Preston and a portable potter’s wheel in a shed at the back of her caravan in Coniston in the Lake District. Her inspiration comes from living forms and the beginning of life. She throws small delicate forms and then fashions them into clusters to make unique wall pieces and free standing pieces.
The unique forms have an element of surprise inviting further investigation. Small enticing holes to look in and discover hold a string attraction to the inquisitive. Thrown in Porcelain, singularly, they are beautiful and fragile but when assembled in multiples they take on a spontaneous power which is even more beautiful and compelling. This mediative environment suggests the expansion of space.
Simon was introduced to Eryl by her tutor and when Simon saw her work he cleared out her garage and took all of her pieces back to Cartmel with him. Her work has adorned L’Enclume’s walls for 18 years now!
Rebecca Callis
Rebecca studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1990-1994, specialising in Ceramics. She has been making wheel-thrown porcelain for 23 years, 13 at Fairfield Mill in Sedbergh and 10 at 'The Factory' in Kendal. She has recently relocated to Kirbymoorside, where she is converting a Victorian washhouse into her next studio.
Rebecca loves porcelain for its unforgiving sensitivity to maker's hand, as a pure white canvas for glaze, and for its beautiful practicality. As her work develops over time, she hopes it retains a freshness and simplicity that comes from the endless possibilities of form.
She has recently been enjoying the use of brush marks and lines to add abstract impressions of scale and place within the landscapes.
Fern + Fell
Sharon's vision has always been to foster a deep connection to nature through fragrance. She believes the sense of smell is profoundly powerful, capable, in an instant, of evoking memories and transporting us to cherished moments in our lives.
Inspired by her own quest for holistic wellbeing, her natural home fragrance collection is made with 100% pure essential oils. As well as offering beautiful scents drawn directly from nature.
